洛杉磯每日新聞報導，2016巴西里約奧運美國男籃第一球星杜蘭特（Kevin Durant）在訓練結束後談起今夏選項，為何沒有選擇加入洛杉磯湖人時，他直白的說，「湖人目前實力，距離我挑選的球隊還有幾年時間。」

湖人今年夏天完全沒有得到跟杜蘭特見面、會談機會，一共只有六支球隊得到跟杜蘭特會商空間，他最終決定離開效力九年的奧克拉荷馬雷霆，轉戰金州勇士，與連續兩屆MVP柯瑞（Stephen Curry）成為隊友。

湖人在整個夏天都積極追求杜蘭特，甚至早從去年夏天就開始布局，可惜連跟杜蘭特會談的機會都沒有。杜蘭特說，「我很尊敬湖人，在我心裡已經有想要會談的球隊，並非只是針對湖人。就實力和現況來說，湖人距離我想要加入的球隊還有幾年時間。」

湖人已經連續三季未能挺進季後賽，而且每況愈下，過去三年分別只贏了27、21、17勝，連續兩個夏天湖人在自由球員市場都沒有斬穫，由於實力和競爭力大不如前，昔日豪門湖人已經很難吸引一線自由球星。

目前湖人把希望擺在培養新人、年輕天賦和明年夏天的自由球員市場。湖人現在手裡有一票新秀，包括去年榜眼羅素（DAngelo Russell），今年榜眼英格拉姆（Brandon Ingram），以及三名年輕新秀克拉克森（Jordan Clarkson）、藍道（Julius Randle）、南斯（Larry Nance Jr.）。
